I paid too much for my cantaloupe. The color was golden which made me think it was ready. I cut it open, beautiful color, absolutely no fragrance and the fruit was hard. Took it back, I am going to try again.

Idk abaut you but that watermelen looks like it wasent done yet the watermelon needs to be red not pink.

The firmer the better. I can't stand mushy watermelon. Same with cantaloupe

Personally I’ve cut a lot of watermelon and your method would take way too long and too many cuts. Cut your watermelon into rounds then cut the rounds in half. Turn the half on it’s side Rhine side down on the cutting board. Then run the knife between the Rhine and ripe melon. Less cutting last chance for a mishap.

My grandfather grew 3 acres of watermelons every summer, just for our family and a little for some friends! His "watermelon law" was: Watermelon is like a woman. You take one at the right time / when it is "mature", i.e. she is ready for marriage...and then ...what the Lord has ordained for you! Don't waste your time choosing. By the way, if this is ... a nice watermelon, that means you've never eaten a really ripe, blood-red, and sweet watermelon! Greetings from Bulgaria!

Low pitch sound buddy and it wont be green like yours, then push on the sides if its soft then to ripe. I like mine red inside. Sorry you picked a green melon.

You can also tell if a watermelon is ready to eat by cutting it first and taking a bite or 2. It it's not sweet, cut another. If grocer asks you what you're doing, tell him to get lost. And, best way to cut the melon is like peeling an apple - cut all the green rind away and leave nothing but the red, then cut pieces whatever way you want. As far as looking at the bottom of the melon or tapping on the melon, that's a crock of sheit. That don't work. Also, buy SEEDED melons if you can. It's no fun trying to spit out seeds that ain't there.

Mister produce man, I have a question cut open my cantaloupe and it seems to be still somewhat not soft and not completely ripe and sweet, is there a way at this point that I can make it ripen more or get softer?
